What is sodium tripolyphosphate?
Sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), also known as sodium triphosphate and tripolyphosphate, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Na5P3O10. Sodium tripolyphosphate is a colorless salt that is found both as anhydrous and as hexahydrate.
Sodium tripolyphosphate is one of the important components in many products, including detergents, which are produced on a large scale.

Production and synthesis of sodium tripolyphosphate
This product is produced commercially through the neutralization of phosphoric acid with sodium hydroxide to form a mixture of disodium phosphate and monosodium phosphate. The mixture is then heated at 500-550 degrees Celsius to form sodium tripolyphosphate.

2 Na2HPO4 + NaH2PO4 → Na5P3O10 + 2 H2O

With this method, about 2 million tons of sodium tripolyphosphate are produced annually.

Application of sodium tripolyphosphate
• Detergents:
Sodium tripolyphosphate is often used as a component of commercial detergents. This compound acts as a water softener because in hard water (water containing high concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions), detergents are deactivated.
As a high charge chelating agent, it establishes a strong bond with materials and prevents them from interfering with sulfonate detergents.
It improves the ability of various ingredients in detergents to penetrate deeper into the fabric fibers (as well as other surfaces and materials to be cleaned) and helps to create foam and bubbles.
• Foods:
Sodium tripolyphosphate is used as a preservative for seafood, meat, poultry and animal feed.
It is common in food production with number 451-E. In foods, sodium tripolyphosphate is used as an emulsifier and to maintain moisture.
Sodium tripolyphosphate also imparts a fresh appearance to meat and seafood while slowing spoilage.
• Others:
Other applications include: ceramics (reducing glaze viscosity to a certain extent), leather tanning (as covering material and artificial tanning agent), anti-seize materials, setting retarders, flame retardants, paper, anti-corrosion pigments, textiles, rubber production, fermentation and Antifreeze.

Dangers of sodium tripolyphosphate
The use of high concentration of phosphate is known as the cause of cardiovascular diseases and mortality. While phosphate exists in the body and in food in organic forms, inorganic forms of phosphate such as sodium tripolyphosphate are easily absorbed and can lead to elevated phosphate levels in the body.

Price inquiry and purchase of sodium tripolyphosphate
Due to the wide and diverse application of sodium tripolyphosphate, Oxin Chemistry Company has provided the possibility of purchasing this useful material in small and large quantities for respected buyers to provide the materials needed by their industries at a reasonable cost.
