What is Borax?

Borax is a mineral and a salt of boric acid, which is also commonly known as sodium borate or disodium tetraborate. Borax can have various colors such as blue, green, gray and also white, which consists of soft colorless crystals.

The melting point of borax is 741 degrees Celsius and it boils at 320 degrees Celsius. The pH range of borax is in the alkaline spectrum.

Borax has a very soft structure and if it is mixed with water, it can be easily dissolved and its dissolution power is 6 to 100 grams in water. It is very soluble in ethylene glycol solvent, medium solubility in diethylene glycol and methanol, and low solubility in acetone.

Production and synthesis of borax

Borax exists in both natural and synthetic forms and is produced naturally from the sediments caused by the evaporation of seasonal lakes and must be purified by the crystallization process for use. Meanwhile, synthetic borax can be produced from other boron compounds such as sodium tetraborate.

Application of borax

  1. This material is an anti-fungal and mold compound. It can also kill insects such as ants and is often used as a pesticide.
  2. It is used in laundry detergents and household cleaners to help whiten and remove dirt.
  3. Neutralizes unpleasant odors and reduces water hardness.
  4. In cosmetics, borax is sometimes used as an emulsifier, buffering agent, or preservative for moisturizing products, creams, shampoos, gels, lotions, bath bombs, scrubs, and bath salts.
  5. From the combination of borax with glue and water, you can make slime, which has become one of the main entertainment tools for children today.

The dangers of Borax

Excessive exposure to borax dust can be a respiratory irritant, although there is no skin irritation to borax.

If swallowed, borax may cause gastrointestinal upset, including nausea, persistent vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Both borax and boric acid in powder form can be harmful if swallowed.

Price inquiry and purchase of borax
