What is Glycerin?

Glycerin has a clear and colorless appearance, is sticky and has a sweet taste, it is also non-toxic. The meaning of stickiness is that glycerin is a highly concentrated and sticky liquid, and its chemical formula is C3H8O3.

In the past, glycerin was obtained as a by-product in the soap-making process from animal and vegetable fats and oils, but industrial products based on propylene or sugar have accounted for a large percentage of production since then. The density of glycerin is 1.261 g/ml. Its boiling point is 290 degrees Celsius and its melting point is 17.8 degrees Celsius.

Production and synthesis of Glycerin

Glycerin is generally obtained from plant and animal sources as triglycerides, esters of glycerol with long-chain carboxylic acids. Hydrolysis, saponification or transesterification of these triglycerides produces glycerin as well as fatty acid derivatives.

Synthetic glycerin:

Glycerin can be produced from propane in a number of ways, but it is usually not cost-effective. The most important process for the production of synthetic glycerin is the epichlorohydrin process. This process involves chlorination of propylene to form allyl chloride, which is oxidized with hypochlorite to dichlorohydrin, which reacts with a strong base to produce epichlorohydrin. Then epichlorohydrin is hydrolyzed and produces glycerol.

Natural glycerin

Natural glycerin is usually obtained from plant and animal sources, where triglycerides, esters of glycerin with long-chain carboxylic acids, are found. The saponification reaction of these triglycerides leads to the production of glycerin as well as fatty acid derivatives. Triglycerides are modified with hydroxide to form alcohols and fatty metal salts or soaps.

The application of Glycerin

It is an essential ingredient in the gums and resins used to make many protective coatings such as car glazes and exterior house paints.

Glycerin reacts with nitric acid and sulfuric acid and forms explosive nitroglycerin.

Glycerin is also a component of emulsifiers, which is used as a softener in baked food products and as a sweetener and stabilizer in ice cream.

Used as a humectant in pharmaceutical formulations, skin lotions, mouthwashes, cough medicines, pharmaceutical solvents, serums, vaccines and suppositories.

In the past, the most common use of glycerin was as car antifreeze. which has been replaced by methanol and ethylene glycol today.

The dangers of Glycerin

If you use too much glycerin, it will cause dryness and dehydration of the skin, which will lead to skin infection and acne.

It is important to note that some people may be allergic to glycerin. This combination may be dangerous for such people. But in general, glycerin is a non-toxic and non-flammable substance.

Price inquiry and purchase of Glycerin

Due to the wide and varied use of glycerin, Oxin Chemistry Company has made it possible to buy this useful material in small and large quantities for respected buyers to provide the materials needed by their industries at a reasonable cost.
